Notes: Lacey steps up; Coleman deals with concussion; Jeff Daniels visits

ALLEN PARK — While rookie Bill Bentley came on strong early in training camp, that starting position at right cornerback is not settled yet.

Cornerback is one of the most competitive battles in camp and Jacob Lacey is definitely in the mix. It’s possible he’ll have more of a role in Friday night’s preseason game at Baltimore.

This week at camp Lacey has taken more snaps with the ones — the presumptive starters. Last week, leading up to the preseason opener, it was Bentley getting those reps with Lacey inside at nickel.

“Again, we really don’t have ones. (Lacey) is in a lot of different substitution packages,’’ coach Jim Schwartz said. “He’s played well for us in training camp, he’ll get opportunities both inside and outside. When we get to the game (in Baltimore) we’ll see how much and how long those guys will be out there. You’ll see him in a lot of different roles so far.’’

Lacey was signed as a free agent in March after spending his first three NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

Bentley, a third-round draft pick, started the preseason opener last Friday at right corner and picked up one interception, nearly missing on another. Schwartz was critical of his play — and the play of most everyone — after that loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Another concussion

Veteran cornerback Drew Coleman has not practiced this week due to a concussion.

“A couple days he wasn’t even at the facility. When he’s able to get back out, when he’s 100 percent — as you guys know that protocol,’’ Schwartz said. “It’s a very serious thing in the NFL and across sports not just football ... We’ll take him day by day.’’

Coleman, who was signed as a free agent, played last season with Jacksonville after five seasons with the New York Jets.

Running back Jahvid Best has been sidelined since October with concussion issues.

From ‘The Newsroom’

Jeff Daniels, currently seen in HBO’s “The Newsroom”, was at training camp Wednesday. Usually once each season the actor, who is a huge Lions fan and lives in Chelsea, watches practice from the sidelines with the media.

Schwartz is a huge fan of Daniels and the two chatted following practice. Daniels also got his photo taken with Matthew Stafford.

“That dude can do comedy, he can do drama, he’s talented, he plays music, writes. I have a lot of respect for guys who are as talented as he is,’’ Schwartz said. “In his world he’s every bit as talented as Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson. Not many people can go from something like “Dumb and Dumber” to “Newsroom” — what he’s doing now.’’

Schwartz commented on “Dumb and Dumber” which he called “comic genius.” There are rumblings that Daniels and Jim Carey will star in a sequel.
