In a smart move the NFL owners voted Wednesday to change the overtime rules for the regular season.

Now the team that loses the coin toss going into overtime will be guaranteed a possession as long as the team that won the toss doesn’t score a touchdown on its first possession.

It’s the same rule that had been adopted last during the 2010 offseason for the postseason. It totally makes sense.

And it calls to mind one of the most bone-headed plays in Lions’ history (and there are a few). It was nearly 10 years ago when Marty Mornhinweg “took the wind,’’ gave the Bears the ball on the first possession of overtime. They scored on a field goal, the Lions lost and Marty was soon fired.

That exact scenario could not happen now due to the new ruling and the fact that Jim Schwartz would never make such a call.
