Lions sign West Point grad Caleb Campbell

Caleb Campbell’s introduction to the NFL was delayed by two years because the West Point grad had to serve that time before leaving to play football.

The Lions, who had drafted the linebacker in the seventh round in 2008, had not forgotten him and have agreed to a deal after they worked him out privately at the Lions practice facility.

Campbell told the Army web site that he ran a 4.49 40-yard dash and weighed in at 237.

Campbell served two years after leaving West Point. Now he can apply for early release, pay back a portion of the cost of his education and serve six years of reserve duty.

He plans to participate in the Lions first minicamp the week after the draft and hopes to get in town sooner.
