Lions make the QB Shaun Hill deal official

It’s official. Quarterback Shaun Hill is the new Lions’ backup. While word was out late Sunday that the Lions made the trade with the 49ers, the Lions make sure the deal is completely done before reporting it.

In exchange the Lions gave up a seventh-round draft pick in 2011. So far, sounds like a good deal.

The 30-year-old quarterback replaces Daunte Culpepper who never won a game for the Lions.

There should be no quarterback controversy. Matthew Stafford is No. 1.

Offensive coordinator Scott LInehan and Hill worked together when both were with the Vikings from 2002 to 2004, although during that stretch Hill never took a snap.

Hill, undrafted in 2002 and signed as a free agent by the Vikings, became the 49ers’ starter midway through the 2008 season and lasted through the first seven games of the 2009 season when Alex Smith took over.

Coach Jim Schwartz said on Friday that perhaps the Lions would look for a backup QB in the draft. That was crazy talk. They need a veteran to step in if Stafford is injured. And now they have one.
