Lions' DT Corey Williams should thrive inside

With the free agent signing of DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, the acquisition of DT Corey Williams in a deal with Cleveland, got a little lost in the mix.

In fact, Williams’ coming to Detroit played a factor in Vanden Bosch making the call to sign with the Lions.

Coach Jim Schwartz said when he was sitting in Vanden Bosch’s kitchen in Nashville trying to woo him north, he had many things to say to interest Vanden Bosch, but the best thing he had was Williams.

“When I mentioned we completed a trade for Corey Williams his eyes lit up, because it’s not just about one person rushing, it’s getting four of them going. ... Kyle understands that ... It’s not just one person, it’s not just Corey, it’s not just Kyle, it’s not just Cliff Avril or any player ...’’ Schwartz said.

Williams will be a much better fit with Detroit’s 4-3, than he was in Cleveland where he was forced to play end.

“This change can help him, he fits an in inside pass rusher. In previous years, when he got franchised with Green Bay, he had seven sacks inside both years which is really good,’’ Schwartz said. “For a defensive tackle to make seven sacks a season that’s a really, really good number. His pass rush, he’s an explosive player, he’s got good size, but he’s not just a hunker-down run defender. He’s been used that way the last two years, but that’s not all he has.’’
