The cutting begins

It’s cutdown day and the Lions have started the chopping. Kicker Billy Cundiff was an early cut according to ESPN.com. Jason Hanson’s status for the opener next Sunday is still not set in stone, but they have a backup in wide receiver Dane Looker who has been kicking field goals in practice. One day he was four for four. His longest was 43 yards. Hanson underwent minor knee surgery three weeks ago.

Other moves according to scout.com, not confirmed by the team, are cuts of running back Aveion Cason, defensive tackle Chuck Darby and tackle Lydon Murtha, a seventh-round pick who is a possibility for the practice squad.

The final cut to 53 is due at 6 p.m. today.
