Injuries change roster

If you’re looking for wide receiver Calvin Johnson at Saturday’s preseason opener your best chance might be to watch him in pregame warmups. Johnson hasn’t practiced full-out since Sunday due to a protective cast on his right hand protecting a sprained thumb. Coach Jim Schwartz wouldn’t rule him out, but he’s questionable at best. He has nothing to prove and there are three more preseason games for him to get into game shape.
Same goes for rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew who has been limited because of a thigh injury. He’s fun to watch and hard to take your eyes off when he’s on the field, but it would be a surprise to see him out there against Atlanta.
Schwartz would only rule out three players — safety Daniel Bullocks (knee), tight end Casey Fitzsimmons (ankle) and cornerback Keith Smith (groin).
But the new coach has also been careful to err on the side of caution when it comes time to get injured players back on the field.
