Paper: Curry believes Stafford is No. 1 pick
According to a short story posted on the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's website earlier tonight, Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry "sounded resigned to the fact that" Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford will be the Lions' No. 1 pick.
“It’s just the prestige of being the No. 1 overall pick,” Curry, in New York for the draft, told the paper. “You can go to any athlete of any draft and ask them if they want to be the No. 1 pick, and they’re going to say, ‘Yeah,’ and what would they do to get it? They’d do anything to be in Matthew’s shoes right now.”
The Lions remain in negotiations with Stafford at this point, but a team source said the sides are "really close" and I continue to believe it's just a matter of time before a deal is done.

good to hear, dave. i hope stafford signs either tonight or early tomorrow. can't stand this waiting anymore. wonder what the hold up[s] is/are.
Dave, if/when Stafford is the pick how does that affect the rest of the Lions' draft? Do they build around Stafford with another offensive player at 20 or 33 or do they turn their focus to defense?

ESPN reported the hang up is in part the years on the deal, that Condon wants a five-year deal and the Lions want a six-year deal. Shorter term means a little bit less money up front and quicker to free agency and a second contract. More money up front makes a six-year deal more palatable for the player.
As for what happens the rest of the draft, I'd take Mayhew at his word and say the Lions will take the best player available. They'd love to get a LT, but they won't force it at 20. Ditto MLB. On the flip side, they've got enough needs that if say a Brandon Pettigrew fell to 33 I could see them snapping him up even though issues on the defense are more pressing.
When I look at Matthew Stafford, I see Trent Dilfer. Sorry. I don't get why anyone would be excited about him at #1, #20 yes, if there isn't a DT like Ziggy Hood :)

dave - the mayhew said he had some other guys in mind if they don't seem to address a spot in FA. Do u know who they might be looking at? My biggest concern about this draft is that we walk away with out our middle linebacker. That being said to bad we couldn't get 2 picks in next years draft and maybe get a Brandon Spikes and Taylor Mayes. How sweet would that be... I'd sacrifice another year with out a MLB for that combo. haha Seriously though what are the lions backup plans if they can't land Larinitus and Malaluga.
There are comparable guys later on (who I would put ahead of Laurinaitis for a Schwartz team)

Gerald McRath (S. Miss)
Jason Phillips (TCU)
Jasper Brinkley (S. Carolina)
They're trying to knock out the final details and get this done so both sides get what they want.
As for MLB, Michael's right. Brinkley's an intriguing name to me and Antonio Appleby, though admittedly I haven't watched either play (or if I did, neither stood out). I don't think the Lions brought Phillips in for a visit, which was a little surprising considering his injury history.
I fully expect the Lions to draft a middle linebacker somewhere in the first three rounds. Paris Lenon's still an option to come back and is probably the best FA middle linebacker on the market. His nameplate still hangs over a stall in the Lions' locker room and no one has been assigned 53 yet (they gave Curtis Gatewood 58).
And yeah, Maddog, add Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy to Spikes and Mayes and I think you're looking at three defensive players better than anyone on that side of the ball in this draft except Curry and maybe Raji.
Hey Dave, is there a deadline where the Lions say, okay, you still haven't confirmed so we are going with Curry.
If so, when would you expect such a deadline to be?
