Louis Delmas is a Lion

The Lions finally went defense, drafting Western Michigan safety Louis Delmas, with the first pick of the second round.

It's the third time in four years the Lions have taken a safety in Round 2. Hopefully for the Lions' sake, Delmas avoids the same injury fate that befell Daniel Bullocks (2006) and Gerald Alexander (2007).

Alexander's injury concerns - he fractured a vertebrae in his neck against Minnesota last year - are why the Lions felt the need to go safety. Interestingly enough, the Patriots took Oregon safety Patrick Chung with the next pick. Let's see who turns out to be the better the pro.

And of course they passed on USC's Rey Maualuga with the pick. Either I way overrated Maualuga or the Lions (and several other teams) scratched him from their draft board for various concerns. Still, the Lions don't have a starting middle linebacker.

lions should of took Unger with this pick and tried to sure up this offensive line cause they are going to have to score a boat load of points.

U can't tell me this isn't the same old lions. Someone should take Mayhew and Lewand and go punch them in the face real hard.

Hope everyone likes Paris Lennon still missing tackles in quaterbackng our middle linebacking corps. Mayhew said they had some backup plans in case they can't get who they want... one better be trading up now and grabbing a linebacker or making a serious trade for a proven linebacker out there..

Don't get me wrong I like Delmas just not with a couple decent LB's sitting there.

A lot of fans out there are going to be upset because the Lions don't fill ALL of their needs in this draft.

That's just not going to happen.

Something is up with Maulaluga. He's sliding big time on everyone's boards.

They needed a QB - GOT ONE
They needed a TE - GOT A MONSTER
They needed a Saftey - THEY GOT THE NEXT BOB SANDERS

This is a great draft. Most of the people who were cheering the Mike Williams pick, won't realize that for a few years though.

There are still some interesting DT's and LB's on the board. I guarantee they go "up the middle" defense on the next two picks.

thanks for clearing it up. I am not disappointed mad at the picks of pettigrew and delmas. I just thought we could of got a much more value pick in DT or LB heck even CB if we took vonte davis and maybe grabbed a TE like James Casey or Ingram in round 3 or heck probably could of got one of those two solid TEs in the 6th rd.

maddog, they must really like pettigrew. he's like an extra offensive lineman and can catch passes and score TD's. delmas is a great pick. hopefully we'll go DT or MLB in the 3rd round.

I said it on the post after this, but Delmas is a 2 for 1. We shore up the secondary, and the run defense with a hard hitting safety. This was a brilliant pick, especially when you consider a MLB isn't going to be on the field as much as a safety.
