Lions take Pettigrew

Lions took tight end Brandon Pettigrew with the 20th pick. That's a bit of a stunner considering USC linebacker Rey Maualuga and Mississippi offensive tackle Michael Oher were still on the board.

I thought Pettigrew might have slipped to 33. He's the best tight end in the draft, clearly. And will be a good block-receive combo for years to come. I'm just a little shocked that's the direction they went.

Remember, Dave. They said they were going to stick with best player on the board. They must not have been as high on Oher and Rey as a lot of folks were. We can still get Laurinitis, Beatty, Oher, Mack or several others at #33.

Pettigrew will be the best TE we've had in Detroit in a lonnnnnnnngggggg time.

i'm not. the lions haven't had a TE in F O R E V E R. pettigrew is gonna be a stud for us.

REALLY hope they trade down from 33 though.

with the way this draft has gone I would try and offer up both 3rd round picks or at least one of them to move way back up. I mean Oher and the move of bacus solves o-line. jerry and malaluga two impact players. and hell we could of swung around and possibily nabbed vonte davis or laurinitis with our second pick.

We could of grabbed a very solid tight end in that 3rd round.

Same old Lions is all I have to say. WHy the hell didn't we draft percy harvin.

Maybe "shocked" was too strong a word, a rash judgment. I know there were plenty of concerns about Oher (and Rey, too) and the Lions liked Pettigrew a lot. In my head I guess I had it that they were all comparable prospects and the Lions should go for the most impactful position first (sort of like Stafford over Curry at No. 1).

To be clear, I don't think it's a bad pick - I had the Lions taking Pettigrew on here yesterday and I think he'll be a good player - I was just a little surprised it went down the way it did.

Let's see what they do at 33 now.

Dave,

Looks like a lot of other teams have had an opportunity to take Maualaga..... still there, so we'll have to trust our scouts and management. That last part of the sentence was very painful to type.

True. He had flags, too. His hamstring, his wonderlic, his off-field antics ... He could be there at 33 and the Lions will have a decision to make between him and some of the defensive tackles and defensive backs.

That's the thing about these blogs sometimes. First-instinct impressions sometimes get revised when you have a chance to really sit back and digest everything.

this is insane! how the hell can anyone justify taking pettigrew @ 20!? with sooo many needs? with oher still on the board?! even if he's "your guy", trade down!!! i now have serious doubts about mayhew.

Tight End was one of the needs.

Now we have another monster blocker to help the running game.

It's a good pick. They couldn't pass him up.
