Lions release Henson
The Lions announced the release of three players Tuesday, including quarterback Drew Henson.
Henson played in two games last season, completing 1-of-2 passes in mop-up duty of a Thanksgiving loss to Tennessee, but was a long shot to make the team after the Lions drafted Matthew Stafford No. 1 overall.
His release leaves the Lions with just three quarterbacks under contract, Stafford, Daunte Culpepper and 2007 second-round pick Drew Stanton. It's unclear if the Lions plan to sign a free-agent veteran to compete with Stanton for the No. 3 quarterback job.
The Lions also released cornerback Pacino Horne (Central Michigan) and guard Matt Lentz (Michigan). Both players signed earlier this month to provide roster depth for minicamp.
Rookie minicamp begins Friday.

I actually thought Pacino may have a chance to make the roster. Guess not.

The Lions will likely take Foote as their middle linebacker and then have the rookie Levy as the primary backup for both Middle and Strong Side.
If they make this move, the Lions are actually starting to flirt with having.....dare I say....a pretty decent Defense!

come on....a decent D?......one can only hope the braintrust upstairs is smart enough to go out and get Foote, he only wants to come play here.....any takers on how bad Ford's footstools will screw it up?
Unless Pittsburgh finds a partner to trade with that will be giving up a lot more than Detroit is willing to give up, I'd say Foote is a Lion. And since no one gave much up at the draft, i don't foresee that happening.
Right now, I'd be surprised if they didn't get him.
Yeah, I'm biting my tongue a bit. But a linebacking corp of Sims, Foote & Peterson, with Buchanan and Henry at CB's, Delmas at FS and Grady Jackson at DT.....maybe I shouldn't say decent, but I will say "Not too bad"....for starters.
The back seven looks like it could be good, but a front four, hinging on the performance on the "very fat" and "very-aged" Grady Jackson, looks like trouble.

I haven't got a read yet from the Lions on how much they'd be interested in Foote and whether they think he can play MLB in their system. Unlike Marinelli, I don't think Schwartz will have a problem playing a rookie in the middle if he thinks Levy can handle the job. Alex Lewis, Jordon Dizon, Cody Spencer and Zach Follett are your special teamers/backups vying for two or three spots, so he'd definitely upgrade the unit. I think he's worth signing when he's released, but if the Lions are sold on Levy I don't know it's in the best interests of their locker room to bring him in as a backup. Cap-wise, too, the Lions are going to be close to the ceiling once they get their rookies signed.
As for the defense as a whole, it'll be upgraded no doubt. But I was thinking the same thing last year after seeing Leigh Bodden, Brian Kelly and the like run around in camp.
they did try to trade for him during the draft, but the steelers weren't interested in just a 7th rounder.
i'm thinking now that everyone knows that he's gonna be released after the weekend, everyone's just gonna wait for that.
unless another team comes along with a minimal deal for his services and they trade him.
hope he winds up in detroit though.
Dave- There is a school of thought on the west side of the state (especially GR) that believes Stafford was a Lewand pick and that Schwartz really wanted Curry. Also, that Lewand is the one running the show, not Mayhew, and that time will show that Lewand might have been a bigger part of the Millen fiasco than originally thought. Now this theory is being floated by some very bitter media types.
Your thoughts since you seem to have a pretty good understanding of the workings in the Lions organization.
^bruised egos just trying to make themselves feel better by, again, crapping on the lions decisions.
