Lions draft Levy, Williams

The Lions added Wisconsin linebacker DeAndre Levy and Penn State receiver/return man Derrick Williams with their two third-round picks.

Levy said the Lions brought him in for a last-minute visit last Friday. He started at outside linebacker for three seasons at Wisconsin, but said he talked with the Lions about possibly playing middle.

Williams will be a slot receiver and return man. He was one of the top recruits in the nation coming out of high school but never quite lived up to his billing at Penn State. Still, he ranked as one of the most dangerous return men in the Big Ten and could handle both kick and punt return duties for the Lions.

I love the Williams pick, I don't know a lot about Levy, but I like the fact that the Lions are taking BPA, not need.

Lions relying on Big 10 is scary. This is at most the 4th best conference in college football. On top of that these players aren't even the elite of this pathetic conference.

Didn't watch much Big 10 football but Williams ran a 4.68 at the combine. Is this guy any different than the Wake Forest kid last year that also had bad 40 time?

Ran a 4.3 at pro-day.

Williams had the flu at the combine. He did run much better at pro day, and they'll use him in the slot and as the primary return man.

Should find out in a little bit what the Lions plans are for Levy, if they see him as mike or olb. If they don't project him as a mlb, I'm not a big fan of the pick with Sims and Peterson on the outside. I'm all for BPA, but with enormous holes at MLB and more pressing questions at OG and DT, Levy should be significantly higher than the next man on their board if they don't project him in the middle.

Also, the Patriots are amazing. They've traded twice today to acquire second-round picks next year. They're in a league by themselves when it comes to pick management.

I don't get why everyone doesn't do what the patriots do. It was good to see the lions do a little trading down, hopefully that becomes a regular thing. I'm alright with the Williams pick, didn't do too much for me SAFL though:) They better move that other guy to the mike, or that pick makes no sense.

i like both picks. dave any reason why duke robinson is sliding soooo far? i hadnt heard any knocks on him. if we take a chance on him in the 4th it would be a huge coup.

when you are successful like that patriots you can afford to defer picks. when you are 0-16 you have to get as many players into the organization as you can asap.

Got to OL or DL here in the fourth I would think (assuming Levy is a MLB). Duke Robinson, T.J. Lang, Jamon Meredith, Fenuki Tupou a few names to watch.

Here's something else to consider with the Pats: Eventually the NFL will go to some sort of slotting system in the draft. When they do, when rookie salaries are under control, they'll have the ammo to move up into the top of the first and take whoever they desire.

In a multi-year rebuilding process, I'd take a two next year over a 3rd, 4th and 6th this year as much as you need those players.

Maybe that's too harsh. Mayhew did great to get a 3,4 and 7 (I meant 7 in my last post, but my fingers got in the way). I just like the idea of an second-rounder next year, too. Seventh-rounders are relatively meaningless.

espicially wheyn they are not really drafting for real value. Pettigrew is nice as well as delmas, but honestly how much better would u feel if we went in with Stafford, Jerry, Malaluga, Ingram(or Casey), and Derrick Williams, Robinson. I'd live with that. I'd think we get a very solid A. now we are behind the 8 ball I feel.

Dave Mayhew said that they had a backup plan and guys ready to sign if they didn't get what they wanted in the draft. Any ideas what those guys may be..

I think next year's draft target is easy. Pencil him in. Brandon Spikes....
