Mock draft 1.0
My first mock draft was supposed to run tomorrow, the four-week mark until the draft. But I'm headed out of town this weekend so I figured I'd post it a day early.
I'll have another one in two weeks and then a final mock to be mocked just before the draft. This isn't necessarily how I'd pick – I'd lean towards Jason Smith or Aaron Curry at No. 1 – but rather what I see teams doing in the first round (and, in the Lions' case, with the first pick of Round 2). I'm sure much will change in the coming weeks so don't take this as gospel, but I'm interested in your thoughts on what the Lions will (or should) do at 1, 20 and 33.
1. Lions: QB Matt Stafford, Georgia – Seems the most likely scenario at this point.
2. Rams: OT Jason Smith, Baylor – Smith or Eugene Monroe is the pick here.
3. Chiefs: LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest – Another brick for the Martin Mayhew-Scott Pioli debate.
4. Seahawks: OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia – Walter Jones has one or two good years left.
5. Browns: DT B.J. Raji, Boston College – If Shaun Rogers is unhappy, draft his replacement.
6. Bengals: OT Andre Smith, Alabama – It's early, I know, but the Bengals are desperate for a tackle.
7. Raiders: WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech – Al Davis loves him some skill guys.
8. Jacksonville: WR, Jeremy Maclin, Missouri – Matt Jones didn't work out, maybe Maclin will.
9. Packers: OLB Everette Brown, Florida State – Pack will have their pick of 3-4 rushers.
10. 49ers: DE Brian Orakpo, Texas – Best value on board for defensive-minded Singletary.
11. Bills: OT Michael Oher, Ole Miss – Would start at guard, then move to tackle
12. Broncos: LB Brian Cushing, USC – Assuming Cutler's still around, defense is biggest need.
13. Redskins: DE Robert Ayers, Tennessee – Need an end after Jason Taylor's release.
14. Saints: CB Malcolm Jenkins, OSU – Jenkins mini-slide stops here.
15. Texans: CB Vontae Davis, Illinois – And Dunta Robinson plays 2009 on a one-year deal.
16. Chargers: OLB Aaron Maybin, Penn State – Insurance for Shawne Merriman.
17. Jets: QB Mark Sanchez, USC – Jets get their QB of the future.
18. Bears: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland – Fastest receiver in the draft.
19. Buccaneers: QB Josh Freeman, Kansas State – New coach Raheem Morris was at KSU.
20. Lions: LB Rey Maualuga, USC – April 1 pro day is big for Maualuga.
21. Eagles: TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State – McNabb wants weapons.
22. Vikings: C Alex Mack, Cal – Replaces Matt Birk for the next decade.
23. Patriots: OLB Connor Barwin, Cincinnati – Hazel Park native seems like a Belichick guy.
24. Falcons: LB Clay Matthews, USC – Brooking and Boley are gone, OLB is a need.
25. Dolphins: DT Evander Hood, Missouri – Best tackle available after Raji.
26. Ravens: WR Percy Harvin, Florida – Time to get Flacco some weapons.
27. Colts: DE Tyson Jackson, LSU – Laurinaitis is a possibility here, too.
28. Eagles: RB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia – Eagles have their pick of RBs here.
29. Giants: RB Donald Brown, UConn – Brown's the perfect compliment to Jacobs.
30. Titans: DT Peria Jerry, Mississippi – Albert Haynesworth's replacement.
31. Cardinals: RB Chris Wells, Ohio State – Edge is done in Arizona.
32. Steelers: OT Eben Britton, Arizona – Steelers need to keep Roethlisberger upright.
33. Lions: DT Jarron Gilbert, San Jose State – Don't forget the name come draft day.

I could accept this, would rather have Smith, and then the next two, but I can handle Stafford if we still fix some D
Looks good.
At 33 for DT i'd also look at maybe Ron Brace.
CB could also be an option there with you still having Smith, Butler, and Moore all on the board.
Gilbert? This team needs a nose tackle more than an undertackle.
There are just too many damn questions with Stafford. We will be picking in the top 15 again next year, and there will be many more QB's to pick from in that draft class. I honestly don't think it is outside the realm of possibility that we take Raji. DT is our area of biggest need. MLB would be nice, LT would be nice, but we HAVE to have a starting DT. Jackson isn't an everydown player (clearly) and with Redding and Cody gone we have very little depth at that position.
Don't be surprised when BJ Raji is the first pick off the board this season.

Personally I would love to see 1 of the following 3 scenerios. I'd be happy either way as I think we would get 3 instant impact players. Question I'd have is what else might we be doing via free agency. Do we plan to add any more that way. Like a Chris McAllister? To bad we could trade back with K.C. and swap first round picks so we'd get the 3rd and maybe Tony Gonzalez.

Really the lions can do no wrong in my mind as they have so many wholes. But I'd like to see us ride out Culpepper build our boat then get the captain i.e. a guy like McCoy next year.
If Schwartz is correct on the getting bigger and more dominant up front there is no way Peria Jerry (290lbs) is being considered.
Delmas at 33 would be nice as well.

Jarron Gilbert is more of a DE than a DT. He is the same mold as Cohen, IAF, and Fluellen; why draft another of the same type of player? They need a young, big DT, not another hybrid DE/DT; since they have a slew already. This is probably the only area of the roster where they have a surplus of personnel, which is why Redding was expendable. I doubt they will go for this type of player.

Look for the lions to pass on Stafford and trade up to land Sanchez or Freeman if it doesn't look like they will fall to 20.
People are not talking about how easy it is for the lions to trade because they have the 20 AND the 33.
For example, the lions can trade the 20 and 33 to Houston for the 15 and 47, I believe pretty easily. Countless other possibilities in this vain as well.
When was the last time the Lions had a 'franchise' quarterback? Matthew Stafford is a no-brainer.
Stafford is the real deal and to say Bradford or McCoy is better Please.......
I think right now it's 50/50 between Smith & Stafford & I'd be happy with either one.
I don't think Malaugula will be available at 20.
I don't think Gilbert will be around at 33 either.

you know whats funny? everyone says to pass on stafford, hes got too many questions blah blah blah, and you know what? thats why you are sitting at home and not in the organization. If we dont draft stafford whatever team he goes to will burn us fro the next 15 years and you all know it. All of you saying pass on him will be all up in arms saying why did we pass on stafford? blah blah blah. its retarded. someone commented that we will be picking in the top 10 again next year. well thats true, dauntes old and fat, stanton isnt " ready" and drew henson isnt made for the nfl. so go ahead draft some left tackle or linebacker. and if we pass on stafford i hope he walks into detroit and beats the crap out of us for the next 15 years ,just like adrien peterson was passed up, guess what we get to see him rush for 150 on us twice every year! thats great. all the lions fines are hipacrits and im ashamed that i call myself a lions fan.
if curry and smith are so good why did they go to wake forest and baylor? they shined against crappy teams... wow... atleast stafford played in the sec.
to everyone who says we will just ride it out with culpepper then why not draft stafford? chances are that he will sit on the bench until things get bad... which they will... so he wont get thrown into the fire right away... im with the top two comments draft stafford or he will kill you guys year after year. you are already a joke of the nfl, you pretty much are going to settle for a crappy qb to ride out the year? thats why you guys are at the bottom and will stay at the bottom. grow a pair and draft stafford.
