Jackson signs, Loper in limbo

The Lions signed defensive tackle Grady Jackson to a three-year deal Wednesday, NFL.com is reporting, but the agent for offensive lineman Daniel Loper said he and the team have not yet had contract discussions.

Jackson's deal is reportedly worth $8 million. The Lions pursued the 6-foot-2, 345-pound veteran as part of their quest to build a bigger, more physical front. The Lions have not confirmed the deal.

Loper had dinner with Lions offensive line coach George Yarno Tuesday night and was scheduled to take a physical today. Asked if there was a chance Loper would agree to terms before leaving Detroit, his agent, Leonard Roth, wrote in an email, "Don't know at this point. We have not talked."

Loper played the last four seasons at Tennessee, where new Lions coach Jim Schwartz was defensive coordinator.

Update: The Lions just confirmed that Jackson has signed a three-year deal.

I like this deal. No, Jackson isn't an every-down player, but having a run-stuffer on 1st/2nd downs should also lead to better LB play - especially if the Lions upgrade that position, too. And it's unreasonable to expect that "youth movement" equates universally to signing players in their 20s... a team can get younger overall while still mixing in some veterans.

Agree that signing Jackson was a good move and consistent with Mayhew's and Schwartz's desire to get bigger along the defensive line. Jackson buys the Lions some time to gradually replace undersized DTs like Chuck Darby.

I'd like to see the Lions add a big OL like Loper to the mix. At 330 lbs, the guy looks like Paul Bunyan.

Would or should the Lions offer Loper the same money they paid Stephen Peterman to start at LG?

I say yes.
